For us Capoeira is one of the defining arts of African Brazil expressing the essence of resistance to oppression, dedication to beauty, skill and... collective play. African culture provided the base on which Capoeira Angola developed into a mature art form with complex music, lyrical, ritual and physical self-expression. Our task is to cultivate and grow this collective tradition.

First class in our new space - Come and see 'Jogo de Corpo/Body Games'

We are really pleased to announce that we have a new space for our Wednesday class.  (Moorlands Community Centre - In Brixton off Coldhabour Lane)

Our first class after the summer will be this week on the 10th of September at 7.30pm. We will be showing the film Jogo de Corpo - Capoeira e Ancestralidade /Body games - Capoeira and Ancestry.

Everybody who comes gets a free ticket to our raffle of (now out of print and rare) the book 'Capoeira/ Encontros' by Fred Abreu and Mauricos Barros de Castro with interviews of Capoeira Masters .

The video Jogo de Corpo/Body Games will be shown. The film follows the Afro-Brazilian Capoeira master, Cobra Mansa and his team on travels through Angola and Brazil in search of the historical roots of Capoeira. It is also a personal journey as Cobra Mansa is a descendant of slaves who were brought from Africa to build Brazil.

Accompanied by Capoeira historian Matthias Röhrig Assunção, and ethnomusicologist Christine Dettman, Cobra Mansa finds an Angola full of amazing characters amidst a culture rich with musical, dance and combat game traditions.

Directed by Namibian Filmmaker, Richard Pakleppa, and edited by Catherine Meyburgh Angolan Roots of Capoeira  or Jogo de Corpo/Body Games has just been released and has already won awards.

FICA treinel Dija in London - Classes on Thursday,(13th) Saturday (15th) and Sunday (16th)

Dija or Aldjaie is visiting us and FICA London for a few days. We have known Dija for a long time and seen him grow in Capoeira from his first classes as a young boy. He is now a mature and seasoned teacher -often leading classes in FICA Bahia.

He is still a young Capoeista (born in 1991) from the Fundacao Internacional de Capoeira Angola (FICA) in Salvador. He became Treinel at the last FICA Capoeira Conference in Salvador Bahia with his brother Aloan and others.

He started capoeira when he was quite young - which is not so surprising once you know he is also Mestre Valmir's son. His talent shined through from his first steps of ginga.

He has a fluid, graceful and at times acrobatic style of playing Capoeira. He loves to play Berimbao and has started a youtube lesson channel if you want to take a look. Alongside his brother Aloan (who was also in London before) he makes up part of Bahia's Capoeira Angola young blood.

He will be giving music class on Thursdays and then workshops on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Take a look at the videos below to get a sense of how he plays and sings.
